[이스라엘=AP/일요주간] 수척하고 창백한 얼굴의 이스라엘 병사 질라드 슈왈리트는 18일(현지시각) 5년이 넘는 포로 생활 끝에 집으로 돌아왔다. 슈왈리트와 팔레스타인 포로 1,027명을 교환하기로 한 이번 협상으로 중동 평화에 대한 전망이 더욱 복잡해지고 이슬람 무장단체 하마스의 병력이 강화될 수 있다는 전망이다.

MITZPE HILA, Israel (AP) -- Gaunt and pale, Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit returned home Tuesday after more than five years in captivity, freed in a lopsided ex　　change for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners that could greatly complicate Mideast peace prospects and strengthen the Islamic militant Hamas.

The swap set off massive celebrations in Israel and the Palestinian territories, 　where crowds in Gaza called for more kidnappings of soldiers, chanting: "The people want a new Gilad!"

The 25-year-old Schalit's poor condition, a jarring appearance by masked Hamas men during his release and the prospects of a strengthened Hamas bode poorly for future relations between Israel and the Palestinians.
